Although you can easily find evidence of fast food feasting in trash cans all over America, the industry continues to suffer from a bad rap. This is due to the general unhealthy nature of the food, which includes excessive amounts of fat, sugar, and sodium. When fast food is too heavily relied upon as a source of nourishment, it stands to reason that inevitable health problems follow. Among the highest concerns are obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

In response to the negativity towards their greasy food, restaurants have made a considerable effort to add healthier foods to their menus. These include salads, soups, and fruit. Fast food places have also developed lower calorie versions of the food already on their menus. Still, it is up to the customer to make the choice of salad over fries.

In another effort to reduce the fast food related health problems of America, Congress issued a bill in 2006 that requires all fast food restaurants to display nutritional facts as well as list trans fat as an ingredient. Trans fat is a “bad” fat that has been shown to clog arteries. As a result, many restaurants now use healthier alternatives.

But fast food restaurants are not entirely to blame for America’s health problems. Think about the fact that people pay for the burgers and fries that cause their obesity or heart disease. No one is forced to consume fast food. Consider a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health. Research showed that people who consume fast food two or more times a week tend to weigh an average of ten pounds more than those who do not eat as much fast food. So be advised: it is ultimately up to you and no one else to responsibly decide how much and how often you eat fast food.
