Perfume Review: Santos and Pasha by Cartier

I love perfumes for men from the eighties, and whereas many were discontinued, some of them are still on the market. This is a review of two of my favourites: Santos and Pasha, both by Cartier.

The opening notes of Santos are not very impressive, at least for someone who is not familiar with the perfumes from that period. It has a typical aroma of those years, with notes of lavender, ginger and vetiver. In the middle notes there is an interesting evolution, and it looses the green notes and becomes more “animal”, thanks to castoreum, an extract from the beaver’s scent gland. The smell is like musk, with smoked leather, but more intense.
This Cartier perfume is very dynamic at this point, mixing burnt incense, resins, something of shaving wax, wood and nutmeg. In the base notes the resin aroma is still there, with soft notes of vanilla, patchouli and a note of sandalwood in the background.
The style of this perfume is fresh, but the freshness comes from green notes rather than citrus. If we include the intensity of the resins, the best uses for this Cartier perfume in order of suitability are: cold days of the year, night-outs, work environment and daily use. The proper age starts from 30 years.

Pasha  perfume has a classic opening of mandarin and lavender with mint. In the middle notes it becomes softer, similar to Jazz by Yvers Saint Laurent, but with more wood than spices, and an oceanic aroma, possibly from a mix of coriander and rose stems. In the base there are notes of sandalwood, mixed with resins and – according to Cartier’s website – musk with patchouli.
Unlike Santos, this other Cartier perfume is a summer fragrance, thanks to its freshness and the note of mint. Ideal for a daily use, again the proper age starts at 30.
